The Secret Life of Walter Mott Kal Wagenheim 9780984615421 Books Reviews
The Secret Life of Walter Mott is an endearing trip back to the 1950's with a man who wants what we all want love; financial security, and a place to call home. Walter's journey touched my heart. Jeff Ambers, Life Coach. Millburn, New Jersey
A fascinating tale of living a double life. Once I got started with the story, I couldn't put it down.
While reading The Secret Life of Walter Mott I could not help but stop to laugh out loud more than a dozen times. Clever, hilarious, zany. The detailed descriptions put the reader right in the middle of the action, sleeping in Walter's office, sneaking in and out of the SIC, enjoying a late night drink at Latino Casino, even controlling one's urge to sneak a scratch while reading about the outbreak of those pesky six-legged critters.
Could not put the book down until I was done following Walter Mott in his bizarre world.
Just when the tongue-in-cheek writer's scene has been vacant without the likes of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., in walks Kal Wagenheim to continue the tradition of zany comedy, laugh-a-minute antics of Walter Mott who means well, but...
Order The Secret Life of Walter Mott and bring some hearty laughter into your life!
Salvatore Buttaci, author of Flashing My Shorts
"Kal Wagenheim brings back brilliantly those mind-deadening days of closed corporate life in America when creative minds worked mostly, and indefatigably, in trying to find ways to escape from it. Walter Mott, lost in the office maze, was brilliant at thinking up a sort of Rube Goldberg scheme as a way to escape, but fate, and his proving all too human, led him into all sorts of misadventures along the way. By turns funny and ironic, it also provides details of what office life was like back then, the way it once was. Wagenheim has written a comic novel that is a tour de force."--John Bowers' latest novel is Love in Tennessee
"Kal Wagenheim takes us on a hilarious, poignant, trip back to the Fifties, when conformity was the internalized order of the day. Walter Mott is a memorable character, a rebel in his own way, a Walter Mitty as schemer as well as dreamer. This is a wonderfully entertaining comic novel that often zings at the strings of the reader's heart"--Robert Friedman, author of Shadow of the Fathers, and other novels.
"An imaginative blend of MAD MEN's angst, Cheever's white collar dissatisfaction, and Thurberesque whimsy"--Bill Mesce, Jr, award winning author of several historical crime novels, including "The Advocate, "The Defender" and "Four Day Shoot"
Some books are just delights - light, airy, and easy. Kal Wagenheim has written one of those books. The Secret Life of Walter Mott takes us back to a simpler time, the nineteen fifties, and playfully shares a character who seems to be right out of a James Thurber fantasy but who is living a life of real secrets and schemes.
Wagenheim had done a masterful job of capturing the details of Newark, New Jersey and those times when post World War America was setting the stage for economic expansion and unrivaled possibilities. Perhaps more masterful is the author's encapsulation of that cultural and economic potential in his eponymous character's life.
With humor and sensitivity Wagenheim introduces us to a cast of characters straight from the cubicles of business. Sadly, they all lack the desire, the motivation, the oomph to be more - all that is except for Walter Mott. Creative, rebellious, sexual, and very human Mott is the grain of sand that ultimately doesn't fit in. Yet, his adventures and misadventures always end up with him fitting in just fine.
This is a book that you want to read for a laugh and maybe for a groan of recognition. (Kenneth Weene - author of Memoirs From the Asylum and Widow's Walk)
"Men, the company is faced with a crisis; a serious threat to the well-being of every employee and every employee's family. But before I reveal the nature of this crisis, I must remind you that this is a top secret matter; a matter of the utmost delicacy, which, if ever made public, could besmirch the good name and future of the company." "Men," he boomed again, "at some unascertained time in the recent past, someone in this building became infested with a certain species of body louse, more commonly known as ... crabs!" "Men, I assume this happened because some individual - presumably one of the company's employees - although I find it difficult to believe - became infested. I also haven't discounted the possibility that some subversive elements in our society, possibly in cahoots with the Soviet Union, are responsible, in order to demean and discredit our democracy and our free enterprise system. It seems a strange coincidence - very strange - that this crisis should befall us, just at a time when the Soviets have launched the first missile to reach the moon." "Either way, this thing is catching and very prolific.... This morning, after visual reconnaissance, I would estimate that perhaps twenty-five percent of our five thousand, eight hundred and thirty-five employees are casualties, and it could jump much higher in the next few days."
To quote an old saying from a TV show... "Did I Do That?" In the past 10 years Walter Mott has lived secretly in his office, had an ongoing friendship with a woman named Stormy, who actually started this 6 legged infestation allowing him to infest hundreds of his coworkers, infested the money he has saved by not having to pay rent and utilities and ended up acquiring himself a small fortune. Oh yeah, he has also met a young lady named Scarlett, named after the character in Gone With the Wind.
The Secret Life of Walter Mott is set in the fifties, while Eisenhower is president and Castro is still just a young Cuban rebel leader. Drive-ins are a thing of the day, or should I say night, and the biggest fantasy in life is to work hard so that one day you can retire. But Walter Mott has decided to speed this process up and retire at 40. To take his fortune and see the world. To never have to work another day for the "man" but enjoy life while he's still young. But as with all plans, there are pitfalls. Walter's biggest will come when he meets Scarlett.
While reading The Secret Life of Walter Mott I found myself laughing so hard at times that I actually had tears in my eyes. Kal Wagenheim has written a very imaginative, humorous book that I simply loved.
I'm sure there are those who would enjoy this book. I was not one of them; I only read it because it was a book club pick.
